Comprehensive medical and travel insurance is a very important requirement when travelling abroad. Private medical care is fairly costly in South Africa and most will require payment up front for any services rendered. It is vitally important to check with your medical scheme or health plan before travelling, whether you are covered abroad in the event of any medical attention that may be required. Your plan may not cover you abroad, and extra medical insurance will be needed.
